Season 1, Episode 6—Shadows
“I would never lie. I willfully participated in a campaign of misinformation.”
To their surprise, Mulder and Scully are requested by Chief Blevins to quietly investigate the unexplained deaths of two terrorists who are the victims of internal mutilation and a high level of electrostatic charge. The investigation leads them to the suicide of high-ranking businessman Howard Graves, whose secretary, Lauren (Lisa Waltz), was assaulted by the extremists moments before their deaths. After several bizarre incidents, Mulder becomes convinced Graves is haunting Lauren and using a form of psychokinesis to enact revenge again his business partner for illegally selling the terrorists secret government information.
Not a classic in any regard, “Shadows” is a good example of an early Mulder vs. Scully episode in which the two are polar opposites in their theories as to who, or what, is responsible for the crimes—Scully concludes Graves faked his own death and that Lauren is in on the con, while Mulder stands by his idea that Graves has turned into a poltergeist and using otherworldly powers to complete unfinished business. Scully’s response to that: “They’re here!”
