Season 1, Episode 15
A botched sting operation results in FBI Agent—and Scully’s ex boyfriend—Willis getting shot by the very criminal he was trying to apprehend, ex-prison guard-turned-murderer Warren Dupre. After Scully shoots Dupre dead, his spirit is transferred into Willis’s body, bringing Willis back from the dead. Playing the role of Willis, Dupre uses the power of the FBI, and Scully’s assistance, in finding his partner-in-crime and lover, Lula Phillips, while subsequently putting Scully in danger.
A mixed bag, “Lazarus” presents an interesting idea that isn’t played to its strengths. The script unnecessarily turns Scully into a uncharacteristically wide-eyed damsel-in-distress; a similar ploy was used in “Fire” when Mulder was manipulated by ex-girlfriend Phoebe Green, turning him into a confused puppy dog. The fact that Scully would be smitten with someone as cold as Willis (pre-possession) does her character a disservice.
